The Question Every New Boater in Wexford Ends Up Asking the Harbormaster

New arrivals at the Harbour Center almost always ask the same thing, and it usually happens within the first few weeks of owning a slip. They watch the water sit at the same level morning, noon, and after a hard rain, and they want to know where it's coming from. Not the marsh outside the gates, which rises and falls with the moon like every other tidal creek on the island. The harbor itself, sealed off by a lock, never seems to move.

It isn't rain. It isn't a hose. It's a controlled fill system tied to the high tide, and once you understand how it works, a few other things about living in Wexford start to make sense too.

A Harbor That Doesn't Answer to the Moon

Wexford's inland harbor covers roughly 37 acres and connects to Broad Creek through a lock, one of only three such systems on the East Coast. The lock lets water in on a schedule the harbor controls rather than the moon, which means the basin holds a nearly constant depth of about eight feet regardless of what the tide charts say outside the gate. That depth is enough for vessels up to 70 feet with beams as wide as 19 feet, and it's why owners describe the place as the rare spot on Hilton Head where you can dock a real yacht behind your own house.

There are 280 slips inside the system. About half, 138, sit directly behind private residences, and the rest cluster behind the clubhouse for shared use. The approach channel gets dredged on a regular schedule, and Wexford maintains its own permitted site for the sediment that comes out of it, which is a level of infrastructure most residential harbors never have to think about because they don't need it. A harbor that never drains doesn't silt up the way an open tidal creek does, but it does need someone managing what comes in through the gate.

What a Level Harbor Actually Buys You

None of this matters much until you've owned a boat somewhere without it. On a normal tidal dock, low tide means the deck sits well below the walkway, lines need constant adjusting, and leaving at the wrong hour can mean grounding out in the mud before you clear the creek. Inside Wexford's lock, none of that planning exists. The boat sits at the same height relative to the dock at 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. There's no waiting on a tide window to head out for a Saturday run up the Intracoastal, and no worrying about a keel resting on exposed mud overnight.

The Harbour Center, which sits at the center of the system, functions as the informal hub for all of it: ice, snacks, boating supplies, and a place to check in before or after a trip out through the lock. It's a small building doing a lot of the social work that keeps boating in Wexford feel less like a solitary chore and more like a shared routine among neighbors who all keep the same schedule, because the harbor keeps it for them.

The Calendar That Runs on the Water

That predictability shows up on the harbor's event calendar too, and it's a fuller one than most people expect from a private residential marina. The Blessing of the Fleet and Boat Commissioning mark the start of the boating season each year, and the Holiday Boat Parade closes it out. In between, there are monthly Commodore Dock Parties, an annual Cobia Fishing Tournament, and a Sandbar Party that's become one of the more talked-about informal gatherings on the water. None of these depend on the tide cooperating, because inside the lock the water is always where it's supposed to be.

Two Minutes by Cart to the Village

Step off the dock and the same logic that keeps the harbor level keeps the evening simple too. The Village at Wexford sits just outside the community's gate, close enough that most residents make the trip by golf cart rather than car, and it functions as the informal dining room for the whole neighborhood.

The Jazz Corner anchors one corner of it, a club and restaurant that's booked live music nightly from 5:15 to 10:30 since 1999. Its 2026 and 2027 calendar already has acts like Noel & Maria, Antonia Bennett, and Benny Benack Jazz on the schedule, which is a fuller lineup than a lot of standalone jazz rooms twice its size carry. A short walk away, Ombra Cucina Italiana runs under chef Michael Cirafesi, who's been voted Best Chef on Hilton Head Island seven years running. For something more casual, there's the patio at British Open Pub, the rodizio-style spread at Cowboy Brazilian Steakhouse, or a quick burrito and coffee at Java Burrito Co. before an afternoon on the water rather than after it. The retail side of the Village fills in around the restaurants with shops like Smith Galleries, the Lilly Pulitzer Signature Shop, and Quinn's Diamond Jewelers, none of it more than a few minutes' cart ride from the harbor gate.

The Detail That Actually Explains the Place

It's easy to describe Wexford in the same language used for any gated golf and boating community on the island, amenities listed out like a brochure. What that misses is the specific piece of engineering underneath all of it. The lock is the reason a Tuesday evening on the water looks the same as a Saturday morning, the reason a slip behind a private dock holds the same value regardless of what the moon is doing, and the reason a harbormaster answers the same question from every new owner who moves in. Once you've heard the answer, the rest of the routine, the dock parties, the short cart ride to dinner, the boat that's always sitting exactly where you left it, stops feeling like coincidence and starts looking like design.
